The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is a globally renowned event celebrating the best in advertising, design, and communications. For the 2014 festival, we collaborated with Leo Burnett’s Juan Woodbury to craft a visual spectacle for the opening and closing gala events. These moments needed to captivate and inspire audiences of creative professionals from around the world while complementing the themes of the events: "Fire and Earth" for the opening gala and "Ice and Snow" for the closing.
Cannes Lions is an iconic festival, and the opening and closing galas are among its most significant events. These moments required dynamic, visually stunning content that could set the tone and leave a lasting impression. We were brought in to develop motion graphics that would enhance the themes of the events, with our team contributing hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animations to elevate the experience.
Our process began by working closely with the creative leads to understand the visual language needed to reflect the gala themes. For "Fire and Earth," we aimed for warm, textured animations that embodied movement and transformation. For "Ice and Snow," the focus shifted to cool, ethereal designs that captured the elegance and beauty of winter.
Using Photoshop, we meticulously drew over live-action footage, frame by frame, to create a hand-drawn aesthetic. This style gave the visuals a raw, grunge-like texture, adding an organic, almost tactile quality to the animations. The final artwork was composited and animated in After Effects, where we blended the hand-drawn frames with the live-action footage to create seamless, immersive visuals.
The final deliverables were a series of motion graphic pieces projected onto large screens during the opening and closing gala events. The "Fire and Earth" animations radiated warmth and energy, while the "Ice and Snow" visuals evoked tranquility and grace. Each piece complemented the event’s themes, immersing the audience in the creative world of Cannes Lions.
