Ghost Box was a groundbreaking project spearheaded by Leviathan in Chicago, IL, designed to push the boundaries of interactivity and holographic 3D projection mapping. The machine offered users a fully immersive, virtual experience where they could customize and interact with environments in real time—changing car paint colors, backgrounds, rims, and more. It was a blend of art, technology, and experiential design, aimed at captivating audiences and showcasing the future of interactive displays.
Leviathan sought to develop an experiential installation that combined the precision of 3D projection mapping with the creativity of user-controlled environments. They needed a visual language that seamlessly integrated with the machine’s dynamic capabilities. With my expertise in 2D motion graphics and interactive UI design, I was tasked with creating animations and interfaces that would enhance the overall experience and bring this ambitious vision to life.
The process began with concept development, exploring how 2D graphic animations could interact with the holographic 3D environments in an intuitive and visually engaging way. I worked closely with Leviathan’s creative team to align the visual style of the animations with the project’s futuristic aesthetic.
The 2D graphics were designed to respond dynamically to user inputs from a custom app built for Ghost Box. This meant the animations had to feel seamless, whether transitioning paint colors, altering backgrounds, or highlighting specific features like car rims. Additionally, I designed and animated the UI for the app itself, ensuring that the controls were intuitive and complemented the high-tech feel of the installation. The app UI included interactive sliders, color pickers, and customizable settings that allowed users to manipulate the experience in real time.
The final product was a holographic, 3D projection-mapped installation that combined user-controlled 2D animations with real-time interactivity. The animations responded fluidly to app inputs, creating an experience that was not only visually stunning but also deeply engaging. The app UI design played a crucial role, providing a seamless interface for users to control and customize the environment.
